Quit “shoulding” - on yourself
I noticed that who ever I work with, no matter where people come from we will talk about productivity at some point. Being productive is just as important for a dad/mum as well as for a young start up entrepreneur or senior CEO trying to fit into the new world.
What I have learnt along my journey is that with productivity and high pressure people tend to think and act as If self- abuse or self-punishment in the form of thinking like:
I should accomplish this
I should be better at this
I should make more time for this
I should get this done by then and then
Is an absolute MUST to achieve goals?
Here is my question though ? How much pressure and running around is sustainable ?
Can a more gentle approach combined with resting and relaxing times be more desirable and be more productive at the same time?
Think about this:
How much does your body care if you are successful or not?
How much does a child-relative care about how successful you are?
And last but not least :
How much do you care about being healthy and good to be around when achieving/ getting to your goals?
Sleepless 10-14h nights at the office are NOT COOL anymore.
Studies and research is coming out about important sleep really is and how radical you should take care of your mental health if you struggle with insomnia.
Let’s dive in and find out more about this juicy topic that will most likely affect you in one way or another.
In this episode and many other episodes I touch on topics that I usually work on with my clients. Here in my podcast it will be targeted to a broad spectrum of people. If you'd like to go more into depth with a topic I address, reach out to me.

Hello, hello, and welcome to the Borealis
Unknown:experience. I'm your host Aurora, life coach and companion
Unknown:on this beautiful journey called life. And with my podcast here,
Unknown:I'm hoping to bring your piece and insights about yourself that
Unknown:you haven't known about yourself yet. Today, I want to talk about
Unknown:productivity, how to be super productive, less burned out,
Unknown:more kind to yourself and others. In my coaching, I offer
Unknown:one on one sessions, to people that are entrepreneurs, young
Unknown:mothers, young dads, young individuals who want to tap into
Unknown:their true potential. And oftentimes we talk about
Unknown:productivity because we want to accomplish more, but feel less
Unknown:stressed, less scattered, more focused. So that's what I
Unknown:noticed in my coaching is that everybody benefits from talking
Unknown:and learning about productivity, no matter where you come from,
Unknown:no matter what you're struggling with, or no matter what your
Unknown:superpower is, productivity is key. This is why we're also
Unknown:going to talk about quit shooting on your self shooting
Unknown:like in should. What I noticed, not only in men, but also in
Unknown:women is that we put extra pressure onto ourselves. And we
Unknown:don't do that because we want to harm ourselves, we want to do
Unknown:that, because we feel that is going to make us more
Unknown:productive. So we add that little bit of extra pressure, a
Unknown:little bit of extra guilt. And then we think we can fully
Unknown:function and be productive and accomplish things and be the
Unknown:awesome vibrant person that we want to be in our community. But
Unknown:what does that do to your self esteem to your over all, mental
Unknown:and physical and emotional? Let's call it environment, it
Unknown:creates tension. And tension to some degree is awesome. Tension
Unknown:is what pushes us forward is what brings us closer to a goal
Unknown:gets us out of bed in the morning. But if there's too much
Unknown:tension, we are blocking ourselves off and restricting
Unknown:ourselves. So let me give you an example. Let's take woman 35
Unknown:years old, she is running a successful business. And
Unknown:whenever she gets home, she feels like she has to do more.
Unknown:She cannot relax. She has to think about the next day she has
Unknown:to think about her employees how to make make them work harder
Unknown:and smarter and be careful that they don't burn out. She also
Unknown:wants to be a good wife and she also wants to be a fun friend to
Unknown:be around. Doesn't that sound very exhausting already? And
Unknown:does it really make her more productive that when she gets
Unknown:home and could be relaxing and taking real good care of
Unknown:herself? She keeps brainstorming about stuff that she could do
Unknown:better?
Unknown:I don't think so. I think that this woman is going to sooner or
Unknown:later burn out because she is punishing herself into success
Unknown:in stead of thriving and relaxing into her success and
Unknown:appreciating every baby step that she's making towards a set
Unknown:goal. She is pushing further and further and further. And chances
Unknown:are that she is struggling with insomnia that she has no time
Unknown:for her husband and his life and his roblems to listen him out.
Unknown:And she has a hard time to relax when she is with her friends,
Unknown:because she never relaxes. And when she is with her friends,
Unknown:she is expected to be fun and light. So she kind of puts on a
Unknown:show to be that persona. So that sounds very exhausting to me
Unknown:already. And the thing is that if she was to come home and
Unknown:just, you know, lay down on the couch, read a book that is non
Unknown:related to her job and give herself a break. She could not
Unknown:only be a better partner, but a friend, she could also be way
Unknown:more productive, because it is not sustainable. For anybody to
Unknown:push through and to overwork and to be stressed out all the time.
Unknown:And your body is so intelligent and so awesome, it's going to
Unknown:adjust to the stress, and we're going to make you more
Unknown:resilient. But if you keep burning your candle from both
Unknown:sides, you are going to pay the bill at some point. And if not,
Unknown:in your youngster years, you're going to pay a heavy bill in the
Unknown:years to come when you are in your 60s 70s 80s maybe even
Unknown:earlier already in your 50s with heart attack with Bernard with
Unknown:depression with what ever you can invent whatever your body is
Unknown:going to do to force you to stop to finally have a break. So what
Unknown:I love to do is to help people prevent these states to help
Unknown:people relax before it is too late. And to make people realize
Unknown:that they are way more valuable to society, when they are
Unknown:productive and relaxed. At the same time. It is really, really
Unknown:important to take breaks to be in silence to reflect to look
Unknown:back. And there's this famous man, he's a multimillionaire,
Unknown:I'm not going to drop his name here. But I've learned a couple
Unknown:months ago that he takes a week of holiday each month, sometimes
Unknown:every two months. And during that week, he has no contact
Unknown:with anybody. He has no cell phone, he has no laptop, he has
Unknown:nothing except a pen and a piece of paper. And he says he needs
Unknown:that break, he needs to turn off the volume around him like the
Unknown:noise, the volume of the noise around him. To be clear in his
Unknown:mind to find out, hey, is my company and I still on the right
Unknown:path is my employee, my assistant doing the right thing
Unknown:for us to be most productive. So he goes through his life
Unknown:reflects about everything, his personal relationships, his
Unknown:friendships. And after he comes back, he's extremely clear and
Unknown:what he wants. And this is helping him to be super
Unknown:successful and productive, also relaxed, and clarity. And my
Unknown:mind is relaxation. And when you have clarity, your mind can
Unknown:relax because your mind is not going into survival mode and
Unknown:trying to problem solve. Right, left and center. It can relax
Unknown:because there's structure and clarity and you can not
Unknown:underestimate the value. Another thing I want to talk about that
Unknown:I think it was in the 70s or even earlier that it was
Unknown:glorified to not sleep. Read people would say oh yeah, last
Unknown:night i i worked until 2am. And this morning, I got up at 5am
Unknown:and started working out and started brainstorming and people
Unknown:would just be like, Holy shit, that person is serious with
Unknown:their business and the swell they are successful. And those
Unknown:exact people now are struggling with hard to you know arrhythmia
Unknown:with heart attacks with severe health problems and the research
Unknown:is being done right now. And it's all coming out, that you
Unknown:cannot underestimate the importance of sleep. I'd rather
Unknown:you take a nap 20 to 30 minutes in the afternoon, instead of
Unknown:cramming in another coffee, I'd rather have you sleep nine
Unknown:hours, right seven or six to nine hours, instead of telling
Unknown:me that you had another sleepless nights of being
Unknown:productive, because that's going to cost you severely. And,
Unknown:again, those studies are only coming out. Now. There's a lot
Unknown:of research being done around sleeping patterns, and how
Unknown:important it is not only for your body to recuperate, but
Unknown:especially for your brain, your brain needs to detox needs to be
Unknown:in a state of full relaxation. And, yeah, I find that very
Unknown:beautiful and so awesome that people are coming out now and
Unknown:talking about their sleep patterns and their insomnia
Unknown:problems, and it's not stigmatized anymore, but we're
Unknown:finding solutions to that problem that is affecting us
Unknown:severely. So stop shooting on yourself, stop telling your self
Unknown:that you should be doing the next thing and you should be and
Unknown:you should be achieving this by age 35. Or you should be this
Unknown:specific person at 65. That's not gonna, it's not going to
Unknown:make the journey better. And it's not going to make you
Unknown:achieve your goals faster. If you achieve your goals, you'll
Unknown:be exhausted, resentful. And what's the point if we can relax
Unknown:a little more and be just as productive and I feel a lot of
Unknown:people in their 30s 40s, especially men, but also women
Unknown:now more and more women, we have to learn to step back to trust
Unknown:that everything will fall into place, and to take a break to
Unknown:allow playfulness and love. Because without that we're just
Unknown:going to be bitter. And people How do I want to say that? I
Unknown:don't want to swear too much here on my pockets. But people
Unknown:are not fun to be around. And what's the point then of being
Unknown:successful? If nobody wants to hang out with you? All right, my
Unknown:dear. Thank you so much for listening. Thank you so much for
Unknown:making the time and leaving me a review on Apple podcast. You

Unknown:the world to me. All right. take really good care of yourself.
